Should a turbo charger be my first performance upgrade for my scion tC?
Ive been thinking alot about it. and i think that the turbo charger kit includes everything from intake to headers. but what if i just want to upgrade with the intake first and then i decide to buy the turbo charger that means i will have to throw my other parts in the trash?
Any turbocharged induction system needs several critical parts to work properly:
- intake enhancement -- a larger or more efficient air filter never hurts
- boost gauge -- essential for safe early tuning
- turbocharger -- creates boosted pressure for the intake manifold
- wastegate -- many turbos have a built-in wastegate; when the exhaust pressure driving the the exhaust side of the turbo spindle is excessive, the wastegate bleeds off some of the pressure directly into the exhaust system; larger, more expensive turbos have separate wastegates
- boost controller -- often manual, this works together with the wastegate to determine the cut-off where extra exhaust pressure is simply wasted, rather than over-driving the turbo; automatic (electronic) ones are available, but not worth the cost (IMO)
- blow-off valve -- when you close your throttle (yank foot off the "gas"), the pressurized air slams against the throttle plate, with nowhere to go, and creates a backpressure shock wave that can damage your compressor fan (the intake side of the turbo); to alleviate this, there's a blow-off valve between the intake manifold and the turbo compressor; excessive pressure is wasted through the BOV
- air meter -- in order to supply the matching amount of fuel to keep your fuel/air ratio correct, the engine computer measures the air flow (including temperature and pressure); there are many ways to do this, including MAF, MAP, etc
- engine computer -- some can be "chipped", all can be "tricked" (by another computer, like an air/fuel remapper, like the SAFC or SAFC-2)
- intercooler -- air, when pressurized, increases temperature, increasing the chance of knock (severe engine damage!); the intercooler is an air/air cooler; it chills the pressurized air to allow more to fit in your cylinders, so when it burns, it expands even further (creating more force)
- fuel pressure regulator -- an adjustable one will let you tune more precisely, and economize on fuel, without risking engine damage
If I forget something, someone else can chime in. 
Some of these parts can be left out and your engine will still work, but it won't work well. But don't skip the boost gauge or other stuff that lets you see what you're doing when you tune. Tuning "in the dark" is insane.
Also note, headers are almost always WORSE for a turbo system, because the turbo doesn't need the backpressure and synchronization of exhaust pressure pulses like a NA car does.
If you upgrade in the right order, you won't need to throw stuff out. Intake first (it stays thereafter), then boost gauge (plumbed directly into your manifold is best) then small integrated-wastegate turbo, small-to-medium intercooler (bigger isn't necessarily better, but it's too complex to get into here), quality piping all along the way with a BOV in there, engine management (e.g. piggyback computer as mentioned earlier). Most of those parts will last for a while. Get a good boost gauge (as high as you ever expect to go, 20 PSI is probably sufficient), and you'll keep it forever. A medium turbo is a good balance between spool-up time and efficiency (the two main factors in the choice). Boost controller is a buy-once as well; get quality.
