Garmin Streetpilot
Can someone please explain the diff. between GARMIN Streetpilot, Garmin Nuvi, and Tomtom Gps?
Streetpilot and nuvi are made by Garmin. nuvi is the newer product line. It's slimmer and easier to take with you, and has more models with a wider screen which makes it easier to type addresses and read maps. Some Streetpilots come with an older type of receiver with lower sensitivity, so you can lose signal or get a weaker signal in obstructed areas (in a garage, near tall buildings or under trees) and I'd recommend to stay away from those. The interface may be slightly different between Streetpilot and nuvi. Generally you can find models in each line that covers every price and feature list that you might want. I'd get a nuvi just because it's the newer thing and smaller.
TomTom is another company with a complete product line too. They have a few "fun" things that Garmin does not have (like more choice of voices for traffic directions). In general I prefer Garmin over TomTom for directions. Garmin often picks better routes and give more detailed directions. They usually tell you whether the address is on the right or the left of the road when you get there. TomTom doesn't - which can be a hassle when the area is busy and it's after dark.
Go to a store and test different models. Enter a few addresses that you know well, and see which model gets you there faster, and is most helpful with directions.
