Why do GPS units have to be updated?
Why do GPS units have to be updated periodically? This seems like a worthwhile question. Some one told me that it is somehow related to the magnetic poles shifting slightly each year. This doesn't make a lot of sense to me since GPS systems triangulate location using satellites, rather than the earths magnetic field for orientation (like a compass). Is my friend right?
Nothing to do with the earths poles, they don't have impact on GPS.
Unless they find a bug in the software there is no need to update a GPS in order for it to give your location. However knowing your location in latitude/longitude and nothing else isn't much use to most people.
The updates are for the maps and points of interest information that the GPS uses to get you from where you are to where you want to go. If that hasn't changed much in your area then there is no need to update. If however they have built or changed the roads in your area then an update is worthwhile.
