How do I fix a prompt to install "mass storage controller" that appears when I bootup?
My external harddrive malfunctioned and died as I was unplugging it from my laptop. Ever since then, a prompt to install a mass storage controller appears whenever I bootup. I tried to install like it suggests, but it is unable to find the driver for a harddrive I no longer have. I looked under device manager, but was unable to fix the problem.
remove the device in hardware manager, but first look to see what driver it's looking for, open regedit, search for that driver and delete the entry (be careful, editing the registry can be dangerous). Alternatively use one of the free registry cleanup utilities at download.com
