Video game software - WIndows 7 home or Pro?
I wanted to get my BF an upgrade to Windows 7 from Vista. He has issues running his XP video game software on Vista. WIll the basic home edition cover the issues Vista has with running the software (it runs, but with difficult navigation) or do I need to get him the Professional with XP mode?

I'm not sure what your boyfriend is trying to play, but if the application doesn't work properly in Vista chances are it won't work properly either in Windows 7.
So yes, he will either have to use Windows XP in a dual boot environment or to virtualize it using the Windows 7 Pro's special XP mode feature. *

There is no Home Basic edition.
There's the Starter edition (which you cannot buy, it's only avaliable for Netbook manufacturers)
and the Home Premium edition for home users
and the Pro edition for advanced users
The Professional edition is probably what you'll want, since it has XP mode.
*you do not need to own a copy of XP for XP mode to work.
