Going to the RDS need help!!!?
Im going to the RDS in dublin this year. The RDS is one of the biggest shows in the world!!! I am competing in the lightweight cob class and i obviously want to look my best.... So what is the correct dress??? If people who have experience competing in the show ring could help me please i would be very grateful
now now rachel dont get angry. i have alot of experience in showing... just not cobs. I have been supreme champion on plenty of occasions in working hunter classes and side saddle!! i just have never done cob classes!!! i was only looking for an opinion! and its not a waste of money if i enjoy myself!!

Starting at the top, dont worry i've done it before and you never know how you will get on. I did a HOYS qualifier on a horse i had only ever ridden out on hacks before (yes she was quality and yes she did have the schooling but not by me). We did quite well and enjoyed ourselves.
so here goes,
You:
Tweed jacket - brown or green tweed is the best. a blue tweed is acceptable but will make you look like you are an amature and as you are competing with the proffessionals you need to look proffessional. a black jacket will most likely result in you being asked to leave the ring.
Shirt- cream, yellow or blue are the favoured colours, not too bright and deffiantely not white.
Tie - normaly some variation of red or blue, some people go for orangey colours what ever compliments your jacket. For example my tweed has a red overcheck so my tie is bright red with cream spots. Always With a Tie Pin
Hat - should be navy velvet with the tails of the bow at the back sewn up. I dont know if dublin requires a strapped hat but if it does then the hat should have a cream leather harness. If it doesnt require a strapped hat then you should wear a navy beagler.
Hair - Long hair should be put back in a bun (for ladies obviously). If you havent enough hair then you need to attach a fake bun to your hat (again ladies only)
Gloves - Brown leather or yellow leather are the only acceptable gloves, only use yellow if your hands are perfect as it will draw attention to your hands.
Jods - cream/canary/stone or some variation of that. NEVER white.
Boots - Long Black Leather, preferably with a garter strap but this is not essential. If you have a garter strap then it should be buckled on the outside of your knee with the loose bit pointing backwards
Spurs - you MUST wear spurs of some form, If your horse does not like them then a pair of dummy spurs (ie the band of the spurs with no neck) are acceptable.
Show cane - plain leather or one of those bamboo type ones.
THE HORSE.
Mane - Hogged
Tail - Pulled properly (no shaving it) and cut to an appropriate length.
Feathers - clipped off
Bridle - Similar to a hunters, plain flat browband and noseband, good solid width of leather. Havannah (brown) Leather being the most appropriate. Nose bands perticularly can get up to about 2 inches wide depending on the head. Horse should be in a double bridle and the top rein should be plaited.
Saddle - Straight cut and large, so that a large male judge can get thier bum into it, minimum of about 17.5 inches and comfy. Stirrup leathers should be able to be lengthened enough for a 6ft odd judge and stirrup irons wide enough to get a good size mans foot in it.
Whiskers, beard and other extranious hair should be clipped off.
Quater marks should be bold and workman like and they should make the horses backside look nice and round. NEVER use a stencil to do this, they should all be done by hand.
Sharks teeth below the quater marks to make sure the second thigh looks nice and well developed.
all white socks should be chalked, hooves oiled,
The horses eyes should have a small amount of black makeup on them to highlight them and then oil or clear highlighter over the top.
Your helper should be in a tweed jacket, shirt, tie, trousers, short boots and MUST wear a hat.

A very friendly group of Showing people where you can get constructive critisism and encouragement from proffessionals and amatures who have ridden at the highest level but people like rachel generaly are not welcomed.
Flying mop, your advice is useless as it is completely incorrect. Also the picture of the horse you have shown yes the horse is beautifully turned out for a HUNTER class. A COB is a completely different type of horse and as such should always be hogged, just as a hunter type should always be plaited and a M&M should always be shown natural. A hack should be shown with a ribbon browband but if you put one on a cob you would get laughed out of the ring.
The RDS is if i remember correctly of a similar size to the Royal welsh (RWAS) and if you turned up for a cob class at the RWAS with a plaited cob you would honestly be a laughing stock, if you were allowed in the ring at all.
Before you start giving advice about showing you realy ought to have experiance in showing in several different classes with different types of horses.
A show HUNTER is not the same as a show COB. both are show horses but turned out differently.
Flying mop dog. I have shown at the Royal Dublin, not for a good few years but I have done so in the past (so very expensive to get a horse accross to ireland)). I used to take a connemara over (the reason I don't know the hat rules is that I never have to look at them anyway as I always ride in my strapped hat).
At the level of the Royal Dublin show you will not be allowed in the ring with a plaited cob! and furthermore it would be plain embarassing if you did. Plaiting a cob is NEVER correct and at the level of the RDS it is unnacceptable. Yes smaller shows you might get away with plaiting a cob but we are talking the RDS here. I do know that alot of english producers go to RDS.
the only time a stock is ever correct in the showring is in a sidesaddle class or an evening preformance at a major champion ship (when teamed with a NAVY jacket or with a tail coat normaly indoors and under lights).
I don't know you and thus your dissapointment realy doesnt affect me. I hate it when people who don't know what is correct give advice for shows this big and then when corrected blatently push for that as still correct.
Yes you can get away with alot turnout wise at smaller shows but at something like the RDS it would be equivalent of turning up to a job interview in smelly jeans and a ratty tshirt, just not done and does not give the best impression of you or your horse.
As I said further up, It is all in the little details, showing is fickle and rosettes can be won or lost on the slightest of things so best to turnout immacculately. When showing my ponies even when taking the babies to thier first outing at tiny local shows I put the same effort in as though I was going to a major county show. If that requires that I stand out like a sore thumb from the rest of the competitiors then so be it, at least I stand out for the right reasons and I give my ponies the best possible chance.
