Why wasn't the old Sunshine Skyway repaired?
After the 1980 Summit Venture disaster, the broken southbound span was not repaired, and the original northbound side was converted back into the two-way one lane per direction form it was before. Then of course over the next 7 years as traffic bottlenecked over two lanes as the new bridge was being built.
But why didn't they repair the broken span? Obviously only part of the cantilever structure was knocked down and it seriously makes me believe that it would have been much easier than building an entirely new bridge.
In a page I find almost unreadable because of thin black print on dark blue, here http://www.geocities.com/pagesbydave/SunSkyDemoHis.html is a discussion from the company that tore down the old bridge, including the fact that it was used to make "reefs" to protect the new bridge.
