how/where to learn marine navigation + captains license in florida?
How or where could I learn all there is about boating; from navigation, weather, and general marine operations for boating?
Currently we are boating the ICW's of florida in a 40' motor yacht. I would like to learn more about navigation and get a captains license, then some day get a bigger boat and take longer voyages.
currently I am looking for training "not for hire". but someday I may want a for hire captains license.
where can I go for reliable training either online or in class?
please don't reply with obvious google search result answers. Im looking for answers by people know more about captains licensing/training..

Start with the USCG Auxiliary, Advanced Navigation course. It is about coastwise navigation for boaters, using charts, tide tables, plotting courses, voyage planning, etc. Cost is nominal for book and navigation tools you'll need anyway.
After documenting your sea time on your own boat, you may eventually qualify to take the six pack captain's test from the coast gurad. This lets you take up to six passangers for hire out on a boat. See www.uscg.mil Licensing link for details.
